One killed and two injured as traders ‘tackle knifeman’ at London market

UK

A man has died after three people were stabbed at a market in London, according to police.

The Metropolitan Police say three people were attacked on Sunday morning at East Street Market, off Walworth Road in south London.

A man, believed to be in his 60s, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

The two people injured – a man and a woman – were taken to hospital for treatment. Police say they are waiting for an update on their conditions.

It is understood the incident is mental-health related and police confirmed it is not being treated as terrorism.

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack but say their investigation is at an early stage.

Commander Peter Stevens said: “Tragically, a man lost his life this morning, and officers are working hard to establish exactly what happened and to provide support to his family. My thoughts and sincere sympathies are with them, and with the other people injured.”
