UK

A woman charged with murdering her five-month-old daughter has appeared in court in Leeds.

Hayley Macfarlane, 39, was charged with the murder of her daughter, Evelyn, following an incident at Woodhouse Moor Park on Wednesday 20 December.

West Yorkshire Police were called to reports of a baby in a serious condition at the park at about 4.45pm.

The five-month-old girl was taken to hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Macfarlane made a brief appearance before magistrates in Leeds on Saturday.

She was not required to enter a plea and spoke only to confirm her date of birth and her home address in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

During her court appearance, lasting just three minutes, Macfarlane was told magistrates were not allowed to consider bail on a charge of murder.

She will remain in custody until a prison video-link appearance at Leeds Crown Court next Thursday.
