D-backs’ Marte aggravates sprained ankle in loss

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte aggravated his sprained left ankle when he checked his swing Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Marte was out of the starting lineup after being the designated hitter Saturday following a three-game absence. The infielder entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning but went down to the ground after a check swing and needed assistance to walk off the field.

“I don’t have any updates,” manager Torey Lovullo said after his team lost 8-7 in 12 innings. “Just being evaluated right now. Nothing more than what we originally saw. It didn’t look great. He creates a lot of force when he pushes off the ground. A very strong man. It just got him.

“We probably need to re-evaluate and find out how quickly we can get him back,” Lovullo added.

Two other key players for Arizona, first baseman Christian Walker (strained left oblique) and catcher Gabriel Moreno (strained left adductor), are on the injured list.

Despite the injuries, the Diamondback hold an NL wild card after going 28-13 since the start of July.

The Rays’ three-game sweep of Arizona marked the Diamondbacks’ first three-game skid since June 26-28.
